Celeb Inspired: Nina Dobrev at Comic Con 2012

So, if you read the prior post, you know I'm loving Nina Dobrev's looks at Comic Con 2012, particularly the gold mini sequined ditty by Farah Khan she rocked with cobalt blue Brian Atwood heels.

I put together a group of affordable sequin mini dresses earlier this week to try and recreate this expensive look for less.  Surprisingly, this type of dress, because of the obvious amount of work that would go into the sequin and bead work, is hard to find in an affordable (under $250) style that's just spot on.  So I made do, finding dresses which evoked the most important elements, the shape and cut as well as the sequins and hopefully a pattern of some sort.

The winning dress I ultimately picked is this Miss Selfridge sequin dress below!  It's not gold but does go well with the blue, open-toe Steve Madden pumps and gold clutch.  I love the pattern on this dress too!  The nude lines are actually the part of the dress which is not layered with sequins.  Unfortunately this dress is not covered with sequins along the back, but the pattern and style are still really cute!  Another close second was this Tahari ASL dress, which would actually look great with the gold clutch but, because of the colors, would probably have worked better with a green or coral open-toe pump.  Finally, the third runner up was this sequin cocktail dress, available at Nelly.com.  I love the sequin work pattern and it even has a cute keyhole in the back!  The great thing is because this dress is quite short (even more so than the one Nina is wearing I think) and has a sexy cut out in the back, it isn't fitted so tight, so that helps offset it from being a total hoochie dress.

The hoochie factor is definitely something to avoid for when you get older because, while you can get away with hoochie styles when your in your teens and 20's and look completely young and fabulous, when you hit 30, something inside says "avoid the hooch!" as a signal to us to avoid that trap of looking like we are chasing our youth (bad) versus looking youthful (good).  That's one of the best things I've heard via TLC's What Not to Wear.  Whether you like it or not, the younger you try to look with your clothes when you get older, the older you actually look (i.e. older persons wearing teenage styles like sweatpants with words across the butt).  By contrast, dressing a bit more age appropriate and taking care of your health, skin and hair actually does make one look more youthful! I've actually seen close family and friends age with style and grace but still look like they are so much younger!  Let's face it, those of us who are in their 30's or older will never look like we are in our late teens again, but there's nothing to be ashamed of by aging and doing it with great style and ease.  That inspires younger women to also follow suit when they get older.  So while a sequin mini dress may not be within reach, the older we get, finding a similar style to coordinate with your age, (i.e. knee length if you're not comfortable with mid-thigh length anymore) goes a long way!  Personally, I think people can ride the mini-skirt and short-shorts wave a bit longer than some other youthful styles!  But that's just me!  Know what you're comfortable with and what you think would be appropriate and go for it!

Floral Shorts, Two Ways

I love the new trends in shorts for the summer!  There are no holds barred this year with patterns, prints, textures and shine. Even sequins are making a statement in shorts.

One of the sweet summer short looks I'm totally digging is the floral short.  This evokes a summery, care-free vibe and with these shorts being such a statement by themselves, it takes little effort to create a fabulous outfit with just a few simple pieces.  A monotone top, flat sandals, a bangle and a cute bag are all you need to be hot to trot this summer. I even like this style to wear out on a casual date or to a casual get-together!  Check out the outfits I put together below on Polyvore.  I love a simple white button down when shorts like these make such a a statement.  What's your take?

Working Red Pants

When I say "Working Red Pants" in the title of this post, I really mean working as in, "work it girl!" and not necessarily pants for work, although that is another great option.  A friend of mine recently told me of some red pants she purchased from Ann Taylor and mentioned that she had some trouble figuring out what to wear with them.  I think adding color, rather than changing a shape or fit, is just another great way to play with your own personal style.  Once a person gets used to the idea of the color, the possibilities can be as numerous as with a neutral piece.  Honestly, I didn't even think she needed my help to suggest looks, she already had some great ideas including pairing these with a navy blouse!  Brilliant!  My initial instinct with incorporating bright, colorful pieces is to start by pairing them with black and white garments as a base and experimenting from there.  A person's style is very much their own expression of themselves so I always say stick with whatever style you like but have fun with it!

These are the pants she bought.

Based on the above picture, I put together a few combinations of tops, bags and shoes I thought would put together some great outfits.  Taking into consideration my friend's navy suggestion, I included some navy and dark blues as well as my fall back black and white styles and worked in a polka dot print, a floral tee, stripes and taupe!  This was a great project.  I'd usually suggest pairing wide leg pants with a more fitted top but a few of these looser blouse-y tops would look great tucked into pants rather than kept loose.  With that last white prana butterfly style top on the right-middle,  I pictured those more with red cropped pants since they would better balance out a skinny bottom.

How cute is that black lace top with those pants for a night out?  Or that adorable polka dot blouse with the pants, those black peep toe pumps and that adorable straw tote bag?  We've got polka dots, bright color and a straw bag which are all calling out "summer!"  Even that sweet floral tee with the pants the nude patent leather heels and white bag are such a chic weekend outfit for going out to brunch with the girls.  How about that white blouse with the black collar, the pants, those black/white peep toe pumps and any of those three bags?  Amazing!  One of my favorite looks that's fashion forward but still keeps it classic is the fitted white button down, red pants, nude patent leather pumps and white bag.  LOVE!!! Also that striped top with the pants, nude patent leather pumps and white bag is adorably nautical.  I love all the possibilities!  I could go on and on and these are only a handful of color and print combinations that could be put together.  There is a world full of tops, shoes and bags I couldn't even fit in here.  But sticking to the basics (black, white, other neutrals) is always a great way to begin working in a colorful piece into your wardrobe.

I hope this helps my friend create her own vision of how she wanted to work these pants!  Go on girl!

White Hot Summer

The mercury is rising and so is the humidity.  It must be summer in DC!

I love the look of an all white outfit for summer.  Look at how the celebrities below wear their summer whites.  You can pair white with black, brown, navy, metallic or nude accessories and you're coordinated for a summer outing!

Check out the outfits I replicated below.  Instead of using black accessories like Kat Sadler in the bottom left picture, I used brown accessories to soften the look.  Add in a pop of color with neon under that blazer and you're good to go!  While wearing all white is hot this summer, it is always a classic summer outfit for me.

What do you think of all-white in the summer?  Is it a do or would you rather not bother with the cleaning bills?  I think it's completely worth it!
