Stylish DC Lady Shout Out

Well, I honestly don't know this stylish DC lady personally but this is an ode to a very fashionable someone I saw one morning on my way to work.  She was walking to the Metro station as I was walking out of it and wearing a FAB-U-LICIOUS (That's a word!) grey cape over her work outfit, which looked like there was a slim pencil skirt or dress, paired with black booties, similar to the ones below.

Now, I was (and still am) way to chicken to actually go up to someone and compliment their outfit, lest they thought I was some kind of weirdo or creepy people watcher, but I couldn't let this triumph of cape fashion go unrecognized!  So in honor of this one stylish person, who keeps my hopes alive that more people will be inspired by these trendy and put together looking ladies, -- I personally want to try a cape coat and ankle booties for work -- I had to emulate this look on Polyvore.  I have to say, although my version is not grey and black, I love the tan/beige neutrals with the colorful pencil skirt.   To make this winter friendly, for chickens like me (apparently I'm scared of many things!) who can't bear to bare their legs in the cold, adding a pair of neutral grey or brown tights to this look would be great!  Aside from owning a cape, which I don't, this look requires putting together a few things most people might already have at home in their wardrobe.  OK, I also don't own this type of ankle bootie exactly, but I could emulate the style from my closet with some pumps or wedges and all I'd have to do was get a cape-coat!  Easy!  Actually seeing someone dressed this cute on the way to work makes me want to buy the darn cape coat and that particular style of ankle bootie just to wear that same outfit!

So here's to you stylish DC lady! You've inspired me to try a cape and given me ideas on how to wear one with grace.  I'm passing your fabulicious message along to my friends.  Keep on workin' it ladies!  You are truly making a difference to all of us who feel they need some inspiration now and then.

Peplum!

So in case you missed my prior discussions on peplum here, here, here and here, this is a treat for anyone who is falling for this trend.  Peplum is not going anywhere this fall so if you like it just a little bit or a lot, there is a peplum look out there for you!  The current peplum looks that are out today really accentuate a woman's waist-to-hip curve and are quite flattering.  As you can see, there are peplum tops, blazers, dresses and skirts in all types of fabrics, prints and cuts.

I recently bought a black and white peplum top, actually it's the black and white version of the coral Motel (brand name) top below, and I really love it!  This reviewer says it's a do!

If you want to try this trend out just a little bit, look for a peplum top or blazer, which is a nice way to incorporate a little bit of peplum into your look. Or go all the way and get a peplum dress or skirt, which is where the peplum really stands out!  There is a peplum look out there for anyone wanting to give this a go!

Rocking a Red (Pencil) Skirt

I love the idea of wearing a colored pencil skirt but Kate (Middleton... Ahem! Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge) got me seeing red with her McQueen number last week!  I've never personally gone so bold in my own work wardrobe but I've seen so many chic women on the DC Metro dressed for work in color, including colorful cropped pants and pencil skirts.   When I found this red pencil skirt on Polyvore, I could not resist to build an outfit around it.  It's so bold I didn't want to contrast it with another bold top but I did like this dark grey tee from Anthropologie, and some great black and white open toe heels from Ann Taylor.  Adding in a colorful bag is a great idea because it really showcases the red skirt well and some silver accessories with a hint of turquoise is a perfect final touch.  If you rock this, you'll be super polished to the nines!

The color red is also so bold it evokes a powerful response.  This is definitely a summer work do!  If I wasn't still trying to recycle my closet wardrobe I would run out and grab this outfit pronto!  You could even wear this out to dinner, a party with friends or even out to a play or performance.  The possibilities are numerous!

Cameron Diaz Inspires with a Cowl Back Dress at the Met Gala 2012

I love, love, love what Cameron Diaz wore to the Met Gala recently!  Mainly because she used this as an opportunity to wear a dress that emphasizes her figure with a long-sleeve, form fitting silhouette that showcased her back, which, in my opinion is one of the most subtly sexy parts of a woman's body.  I also think a plunging back gown is flattering on almost everyone and is a unique and sultry way to grab attention without hiking up a hemline or lowering a neckline.

See how many options I found below!  I love that some of these dresses still have a high enough draped back (like the Alice and Olivia dress or the one from Asos) that you could still wear a bra with them.  Which is always a plus for me because I love to dress with ease!

But then again, I may have to add that pink Rachael Roy dress to my closet!  It's all "business in the front and party in the back" without invoking the negative references like the mullet, which shares that description!

Jeans for All: Any Way You Want Them...

... That's the way you need them! Any way you want them! (insert guitar here). Yes, a slight riff on the Journey classic with a word changed here and there.

For some reason, a few people have asked me about jeans and what's in style today, and I have no idea why! Why me? I don't own all the newest trends but I will try to give an honest opinion on what I think is in (or still in).

When I think of jeans, I always recall a line from the movie Never Been Kissed with Drew Barrymore, in which she dresses up to pose as a high school student, even though she's...gasp!.. 25!,  to write an article for her big Chicago newspaper.   The only problem is, she was a total nerd in high school and mercilessly picked on by more socially adept students, which recalls flashbacks to her own awful experiences.  In one memorable scene, she was trying to talk to the popular girls in the cafeteria when she spilled chocolate milk on her white jeans and said in good humor, "That'll teach me not to wear white after Labor Day!"  (Side note: back in 1999, white jeans = not OK).  Prompting one of the mean popular girls to say "I don't think you're supposed to wear white jeans after 1983."  Which was followed by lots of popular girl giggling... (As if! Wait... wrong movie!)  Well, thankfully, it's been over 10 years since that movie came out (Wow!)  and, as you can see below, lil' miss popular snark is totally wrong!

After looking at what's available in stores this season I've come to the conclusion that you cannot go wrong with any style you like.  It appears as if all styles (skinny, flare, bootcut, straight leg, relaxed, boyfriend, trouser, wide leg) and rises (high, mid, low) are in.  Not to mention the vast array of washes (dark, light, acid and anything in between), colors, prints, leg lengths (cropped, ankle, regular) and distressing!  Shew!  That's a lot to absorb.  Not to mention all these great jeans are now available for every price point.  Hooray!

So go ahead and go wild with you favorite pair, be it the colored and cropped skinny or the classic dark washed bootcut.  Speaking of wild, how wild are those zebra print cropped jeans in the corner below? They are a bit out of my comfort zone, but I am really loving them!   Check out all the great styles for every budget I found on Polyvore.com and see for yourself.  These are only the tip of the iceberg.
