Spring Into Pastels (and Brights, Floral and Crops!)

So I know the pieces below may not appear to go together at first glance, but in some weird way, I think they really work!  I like the idea of raising the waistline on a skirt or pant if you choose to wear a crop top. This way too much skin isn't exposed and it looks classy sexy, instead of the unwanted attention kind of sexy.  I love that A-line skirts are more prominent this spring too! They're so springy and  oh-so girly. I also love the vibrant yellow color of the skirt as well.  It really adds character to the entire outfit.  And the length of the skirt is not too long, but also not too short, and just below knee length. So this is a way to wear trends that are a bit edgier, but still with that element of class, which can appear all-too elusive when trying new things.   The fun colors in the bag and bangle also compliment the look and the earrings pick up on the pyramid shape from the bangle, but are in a more neutral gold tone.

Finally, whether you choose to cover up a little bit more, I think adding a lighter toned blazer could help a person tone down the look if you're not completely 100% sold on the crop top alone. I like how this blazer picks up on the lighter flowers in the crop top, so we don't have too many conflicting colors.  Then again, who knows, right?  You might be out and about and decide that, hey!... You look pretty darn good!

I'd definitely give this one a go.  Try incorporating one trendy piece into your outfit (the crop top/high waist, pastels, bright hues, A-line skirt, just-below-the-knee skirt, a floral) or go bold and try a few together.  It takes some time before knowing what looks will compliment your personal style but experimenting with one or two things at a time is a greatly increases the odds of your ability to put it all together well!

Revolved Around Accessories

While I try to remain optimistic that spring will eventually arrive, I find myself starting to put together more and more springy/summery looks on Polyvore.  With temperatures going back to digging their stubborn heels into the 30's and after a weekend full of warm spring-like activity, I just can't take the cold anymore.  I find myself looking at my long grey puffy coat, scarf, beanie and riding boots as a uniform these days to battle the cold and windy weather, because it's still to cold for me to try to trade in my boots for flats, my puffy coat for a cuter wool coat or to ditch my tights all together yet!  Calgon take me away!

So with that mindset, I really built the collage below around this great collar necklace.  This stands out so much, adding a basic dress underneath is all you'd really need.  I did jazz it up with a black blazer (Alexander McQueen optional, but since I love the shape of the blazer I went with it).  Any old black blazer would do though.  I got a great one in navy from Zara last year and rocked the heck out of it!

Back to the outfit, though.  I pulled some cute fuchsia studs out to pick up on the pink in the necklace and add a bit of color, threw in a black and white fedora, revisited the fuchsia with the ballet flats, and threw in hints of mint with the bag and sunglasses.  How chic are those mint colored sunglasses! I can totally see some super cute, fashionable and put together girl just rocking this outfit to the nines, from brunch to a date to visiting a museum.  This outfit speaks volumes.

If you had to add one piece into your own wardrobe from the ones below, which would it be?  Are you more bold in your fashion choices and would go for the necklace?  Do you dress in basics and add in pops of color here and there and are drawn to the shoes?  Are you into dainty accessories and have a muted style and the earrings are calling your name as being a perfect pop to any outfit?  Do you like to keep up with trends and are loving the sunglasses.  Does the hat speak to your inner hipster?  Would you like to upgrade your style with something new and trendy but still classic and clean and the purse is the perfect pick? Do you gravitate toward clean basics with great lines and just must have the blazer? Or do you love the flirty and girly dress which is so versatile and can be jazzed up for a night out or dressed down for a daytime affair?  This is a hard one for me because I really love all the pieces (I know I owned a very similar hat years ago from H&M and never got around to wearing it) but am drawn to the blazer, purse or shoes the most!  I can see any of those three being staples in my wardrobe.  I do like to use a lot of color in my shoe choices and love basics but also like to jazz them up with something hip and new!

What does it for you?

White Hot Summer

The mercury is rising and so is the humidity.  It must be summer in DC!

I love the look of an all white outfit for summer.  Look at how the celebrities below wear their summer whites.  You can pair white with black, brown, navy, metallic or nude accessories and you're coordinated for a summer outing!

Check out the outfits I replicated below.  Instead of using black accessories like Kat Sadler in the bottom left picture, I used brown accessories to soften the look.  Add in a pop of color with neon under that blazer and you're good to go!  While wearing all white is hot this summer, it is always a classic summer outfit for me.

What do you think of all-white in the summer?  Is it a do or would you rather not bother with the cleaning bills?  I think it's completely worth it!

Peach-y Keen

I saw this contest on Polyvore to put together looks entirely comprised of peach tones and I had to try it.  Even though the contest had passed, I thought I would take a stab at it.  I found a lot of things in peach.  Including a peach lace coat and peach jeans!  Check out these looks below.  I love the ethereal look of that vintage slip dress, the pop of those jeans, the lovely bracelet, how the peach lace accentuates a classic coat and that mixed peach and tan purse.  Who knew there was so much in peach tones out there?

Jeans for All: Any Way You Want Them...

... That's the way you need them! Any way you want them! (insert guitar here). Yes, a slight riff on the Journey classic with a word changed here and there.

For some reason, a few people have asked me about jeans and what's in style today, and I have no idea why! Why me? I don't own all the newest trends but I will try to give an honest opinion on what I think is in (or still in).

When I think of jeans, I always recall a line from the movie Never Been Kissed with Drew Barrymore, in which she dresses up to pose as a high school student, even though she's...gasp!.. 25!,  to write an article for her big Chicago newspaper.   The only problem is, she was a total nerd in high school and mercilessly picked on by more socially adept students, which recalls flashbacks to her own awful experiences.  In one memorable scene, she was trying to talk to the popular girls in the cafeteria when she spilled chocolate milk on her white jeans and said in good humor, "That'll teach me not to wear white after Labor Day!"  (Side note: back in 1999, white jeans = not OK).  Prompting one of the mean popular girls to say "I don't think you're supposed to wear white jeans after 1983."  Which was followed by lots of popular girl giggling... (As if! Wait... wrong movie!)  Well, thankfully, it's been over 10 years since that movie came out (Wow!)  and, as you can see below, lil' miss popular snark is totally wrong!

After looking at what's available in stores this season I've come to the conclusion that you cannot go wrong with any style you like.  It appears as if all styles (skinny, flare, bootcut, straight leg, relaxed, boyfriend, trouser, wide leg) and rises (high, mid, low) are in.  Not to mention the vast array of washes (dark, light, acid and anything in between), colors, prints, leg lengths (cropped, ankle, regular) and distressing!  Shew!  That's a lot to absorb.  Not to mention all these great jeans are now available for every price point.  Hooray!

So go ahead and go wild with you favorite pair, be it the colored and cropped skinny or the classic dark washed bootcut.  Speaking of wild, how wild are those zebra print cropped jeans in the corner below? They are a bit out of my comfort zone, but I am really loving them!   Check out all the great styles for every budget I found on Polyvore.com and see for yourself.  These are only the tip of the iceberg.
