Slim Bottoms, Billowy Tops, Flat Shoes -- Two Ways

As discussed in my recent post below, I put together two looks with slim bottoms and billowy tops. Both are mommy friendly, especially if you're still working on eliminating those last few pounds, which the loose tops are great for!  Both styles are sleek and now.  Wear a loose tee with leggings and add some cute flats and a ponytail to finish off the look. Jewelry is optional in the case you have a little one who likes to grab anything that dangles.

Dress up the look for work with slim ankle pants, pointed flats, a loose button down (which can be tucked in or left out) and top it off with a blazer. Add some fun gold accessories and a low ponytail to polish it all off for a day in the office.

Hope you enjoy these looks.  Like I mentioned earlier, I've seen this look abound in the neighborhoods near us with lots of young mommies and professionals putting their own spin on this DC favorite.

Can You Do Me A Flavor?

That's what my brother and I used to say when asking for a favor! Yes it's childish, but we did pick it up as children and just had fun with it for years.  The fun part about having siblings is to have your own sayings and rituals that only your sib could understand!  Anyhoo, I'd like to ask all my readers for a special favor.  Since I don't advertise on my site, I'd really appreciate all who can spread the word about the blog if you like what you see.  This can be by word of mouth, emailing certain posts to friends or posting them on your Facebook page, which I've done a couple of times myself.  If you have a comment, suggestion or even a reader request, please feel free to post in the comment section, which I've opened up to anyone to post.  Let me know what you like and what you'd like to see more of!  Also I will keep updating the polls on the sidebar to include different fun topics. I'm interested in getting to know you too!

Moving on to the Polyvore collage I've put together below, in honor of the fall I'm creating more and more cold weather looks to get us in the mood for that weather transition.  In DC we're supposed to have a pretty chilly winter compared to last year and I can feel the weather starting to get much colder already!  We went from 70 and 80 degree (Fahrenheit) days to dipping down in the 50's and 60's and even down to the 40's last Friday night.  While the weather is back into the high 60's today, I know it's the calm before the storm.  And because it is so easy to dress warm and cozy in the cold weather while picking our more comfortable fall-back clothing over fashionable pieces (which do require a bit more effort!), I hoped putting together some fall looks will help inspire us all.  Check out the gorgeous burgundy peplum blazer and snazzy driver's cap!  Boy, do I love how Emma Watson pulls of the cap! The tee is from Anthropologie and I had seen it in a catalog, paired with blue cropped pants and, since I loved it so much, I had to try and recreate a similar look here.  How do you like it?  Are there any fall trends your particularly into or any fall staples that you believe will always be in fashion?  I'm loving the equestrian/flat heeled boots which had been around for a while but are really prominent this season.  Fashion staples for me include long sleeve tees and knee high boots.  While the style of the boots will change over time in heel height and thickness and from pointy toe to round toe, in the past decade I've always had at least one pair of knee high boots for the colder weather.

Affordable Sequin Mini Dresses with Sleeves

So who knew Comic Con was a forum for fashion and red carpets?  This year is the first time  I actually noticed that the stars from various comic book and science fiction related movies and television shows popped up on a red carpet and showed off how cute they could be! Some took a "futuristic" approach related to a sci-fi genre like leather (see Kate Beckensale) and architectural details (see Jessica Biel), but others came just to glam it up, no sci-fi fashion references anywhere.

Nina Dobrev just blew me away with all three of her looks but my favorite one (probably because I'm going through a "loving anything sequin" phase) was this:

I love, love, LOOOOOVE this cute dress.  The high crew style neckline and cap sleeves perfectly balance out the shorter hemline and the busy, flashy, sequin pattern and texture.  Not only does this dress, called Piper by Farah Khan which is a whopping $1225 and still available on her website, have sequins all over, there is a great tone on tone (gold on gold with some silver) pattern created out of sequins and bead work that's just incredible!  And those blue, open toe, Brian Atwood pumps are a great color pairing with the gold! Gold + Cobalt Blue = Stylish and Put Together.  That's a real formula by the way.  I also love how she simplifies her makeup by keeping it subtle and hair by wearing it straight and down.  The dress is flashy enough that accessories aren't necessary and the simple, straight, shiny hair is probably her best accessory anyway!

In looking for a way to re-create this look on Polyvore, I came across some pretty fantastic dresses with the similar cut and shape but it was hard to find ones with a similar pattern in a similar color AND which were not "breaking the bank" expensive.  Check out the dresses below!  Can you guess which one I picked to recreate Nina's look?  I'll be posting the winning dress and recreated look later this week!  That colorful Tahari hits a lot of the same notes as Nina's look, but so do a couple of others as well.

Also check out this great Sue Wong dress I forgot to include in the collage below.  While it's not covered in sequins there's a great shape to this dress and similar style with a pattern created in sequins and bead work.

Coral and Turqouoise summer

I may have mentioned before that turquoise and coral are two of my favorite summer colors and when combined they are so fresh and inviting.  Add in some neutral accessories and you are ready for a perfect summer day!  I love the idea of adding in a wide brim floppy hat to protect your face from the sun and provide extra shading.  It also looks great with this outfit.  So chic!  I absolutely love those brown Michael Kors sunglasses.  They're so flattering on most skin tones but the brown is also more subtle than black.  My favorite pair of sunglasses were a pair of Michael Kors ones that I got for just $80 at Nordstrom.  While I love some of the other designer brands out there, I prefer a great style that flatters my face first, despite who made it.  I've even found great sunglasses at Target!  While I do know people who go for the name over the actual design, I'm a firm believer in finding the style that suits a person before looking at labels.  You can definitely score great shades that won't cost a fortune just for a name!  Also if you love that French Connection Dress you can also find a similar French Connection dress at Bloomingdales with the same wood blocking pattern, but without the little tie in front.

You Can Stand Under My Umbrella, Ella, Ella, Eh, Eh, Eh...

After enduring buckets of rain over the weekend and yesterday, I realized my practical rain gear needed an update.  I turned to Polyvore.com to find some new styles in rain gear.

I have a fabulous practical black trench by DKNY from Macy's, a pair of black quilted rain boots by Naturalizer, and a large golf sized umbrella that's black with rainbow stripes from Target that I love, which also folds practically into a size I can carry in my purse.  When the weather is not only rainy but super cold and windy, I also have two back up coats with removable insulation.  One is a stone colored "Girl on the Go Insulated Trench" with a hood from Eddie Bauer that is great for work and the other is a North Face rain coat with an additional insulated jacket insert that you can zip in or out depending on how cold (or warm) it is outside.  The latter two jackets got a lot of use this weekend and on Monday, because baby, it was cold outside!

I'll be discussing The North Face rain coat in a separate, later post.  For now I'm sticking to the stone colored trench from Eddie Bauer.  This was my "dressed for the weather and ready to commute" look yesterday morning:

With my rain boots, I was thinking this look was a bit "heavy" or "bulky" in appearance.  The boots didn't necessary balance out with the jacket, which was not very fitted, even though when I had bought it, I got the smallest size available.  As you can see above, I stick to neutrals a lot.  Also, in case you are wondering, I took the picture of myself off of a floor length mirror on our closet door--hence the trusty camera phone in the picture.  I also realized that, while there was a 100 percent chance of rain yesterday, there wasn't exactly a downpour in the morning so I might not need the rain boots after all.  Especially if I didn't venture out much during the day.  Actually, it is a truth universally acknowledged that when I don my rain boots when it is not raining at the moment, there will likely be little to no rain to wear the boots in.  (Got in a little twist on my girl Jane Austen there for all you classic English literature fans! Boo-ya!)

So to balance out the outfit (I admit, I consider these things like "balancing out my outfit" before I get ready to step out the door... also smelling nice and remembering to put on deodorant are on that list), I changed my shoes to some fairly water proof flats.  At least they are water proof when I don't step in large puddles of water, which happens when I forget I am not wearing my rain boots that can withstand raging streams!

Here's the outfit after I did my balancing act:

Whew! That's a lot better... and more balanced!

Finally satisfied, I stepped out the door with my trusty umbrella from Target, my Eddie Bauer coat and my tights and flats (and of course I'm also wearing clothes underneath).  And what do you know?  I barely got caught in any rain, but there was a whole lot of cold and wind going on.  When did it start being OK for Mother Nature to screw around with us give us gorgeous 70 degree sunny days and then bring in cold 40 degree, rainy weather so that we have to run for the puffy coat?  It's not right I tell you. Not right at all...

Anyhoo, I got inspired to take a look at what options are out there for looking cute while protecting yourself from Mother Nature's cruel sense of humor and found a ton of cute rain weather gear on Polyvore.com that fits with sporty, girly, trendy and work appropriate styles.   This inspires me to be more creative when dressing for the rain.  I had no idea Anthropologie carried rain flats and rain wedges!  They're super cute! I'm not too sure about the peep toe in the rain wedges though.  Doesn't that defeat the purpose of keeping rain out?

I also love a classic tall rain boot, and even more so when it comes with a wedge heel.  Check out the finds below and see what inspires you!  Don't forget to click through the slide show to see the outfits I put together with these great finds.
