Reader Request: Back to School for Working Professionals

After gorging on amazing foods and taking in the breathtaking sites and history in Europe, I'm finally back to my regular routine.  I will definitely blog more about my European adventures in later posts, including the few stand out fashion dos (and some don'ts) I saw all over Rome, Florence and Munich!

But swinging back into the reality of things I wanted to address a reader request from last month.  This one was submitted by my sister who's been a working professional for years but is always striving to improve upon her skills and learn something new.  This fall she's taking a class at Columbia University and asked me about what to wear to school for people who've already been out of school for years and are going back. This is a bit tricky because school, whether it be your primary education from grades K-12 or college, has its own style rules.  What I see high school kids to wear these days is not what I'd recommend myself to try because I'd basically look like a 30+ year old woman trying to look like I'm 15!  Besides they do look an awful lot like they're wearing some of the things I wore in my high school days anyway! Trends are cyclical... Pass it on!   Another thing to think about is when you're so used to dressing for work every day, you don't want to dress that professionally for a class but also you don't want to dress too young or too casual.  Especially if the class is one for people who, like yourself, have worked for a while and are taking more classes to learn new skills.  But there is definitely a happy medium out there so don't give up yet!

As you can see below, I put together two really cute fall looks for this very particular style group.  I think you can still do the cute casual thing really well but look a bit more adult going to class -- as opposed to copying what you see on MTV!

The look on the left I absolutely love because the jeans are colored, skinny and very now!  Instead of just a regular tee, which would also compliment this look, I decided to plug in a cute, casual blouse and pair the whole outfit with studded flats to keep it hip and comfortable.  Adding in the  wrap sweater and some cute accessories keeps the looks cozy and polished without putting too much effort into it! I'd definitely wear this look on a weekend jaunt to the grocery store or something! How adorable are those earrings??

The second look is just so stylish and cute I can't help wanting to go buy something like it myself!  I love the polka dot sweater -- polka dots are still big this fall/winter season.  Pairing this with a colorful, longer and swishy (technical term) skirt and some knee-high wedge boots will have you standing out in a good way.  A pair of simple stud earrings and gold bracelets finishes off this look which, again, looks comfortable, stylish and polished.

Pairing either outfit with the quilted tote pictured below or a similar cute tote, as opposed to a backpack or messenger bag, will really put the "spit and shine" into any look so that even a drill sergeant couldn't find something complain about.

It's the polished look you really want to pull off to make this a more appropriate look for a working professional going back to take classes.  I'm definitely not saying appropriate as an analogy for old by any means, but this type of a look is appropriate because it's youthful enough without making you look like you're trying to be a college kid again.  I'll tell you, when I was in college, I don't think I wore any jewelry aside from a cuff here and a necklace or earrings there and jeans paired with a tee and/or hoodie was a standard outfit for most people.  Having moved on and up in the world, I've learned the benefit of being polished which highlights anyone's inner fabulousness!  Work it out girl!

I hope my sis likes these!  I can see her looking cute in a million things but I think she'd really stand out in looks similar to the ones below.

Summer Office Glamazon

With  summer winding down, it's time to get the most out of what's left in your warm weather gear before having to trade it in for the cold weather looks in fall.  Take this time to look through your wardrobe and put together your most glamorous summer looks from what you have in there.  I know you can do it !

Why not pull out that summery blouse you've only worn once or twice so far and pair it with a fabulous skirt.  If you have a colorful skirt, now's the time to work it.  I love the cobalt blue and yellow combo below.  Jazz up the look with some colorful accessories, a coral wedge perhaps?  Maybe some cute and colorful stud earrings?  And tie it all together with a structured blazer -- you know, just for wearing inside the cold air conditioned temperatures, and to make that sleeveless top into a bit more professional look in the office.  Pair with your favorite necklace, cuff and bag and you're almost there! Now you just gotta figure out how to wear your hair.  I'm a fain of loose and down but a simple updo, ponytail or bun would look just as fab.  If your updo is a bit messy, that's all the better! The less styled, the more effortless chic you look!

Go ahead and work your wardrobe to the max and pull out some combos you haven't tried before!  You'll be amazed what you can come up with when you release your inner glamazon!  Just a bit of effort a couple of times a week will make a huge difference.  Happy wardrobe hunting!

Affordable Sequin Mini Dresses with Sleeves

So who knew Comic Con was a forum for fashion and red carpets?  This year is the first time  I actually noticed that the stars from various comic book and science fiction related movies and television shows popped up on a red carpet and showed off how cute they could be! Some took a "futuristic" approach related to a sci-fi genre like leather (see Kate Beckensale) and architectural details (see Jessica Biel), but others came just to glam it up, no sci-fi fashion references anywhere.

Nina Dobrev just blew me away with all three of her looks but my favorite one (probably because I'm going through a "loving anything sequin" phase) was this:

I love, love, LOOOOOVE this cute dress.  The high crew style neckline and cap sleeves perfectly balance out the shorter hemline and the busy, flashy, sequin pattern and texture.  Not only does this dress, called Piper by Farah Khan which is a whopping $1225 and still available on her website, have sequins all over, there is a great tone on tone (gold on gold with some silver) pattern created out of sequins and bead work that's just incredible!  And those blue, open toe, Brian Atwood pumps are a great color pairing with the gold! Gold + Cobalt Blue = Stylish and Put Together.  That's a real formula by the way.  I also love how she simplifies her makeup by keeping it subtle and hair by wearing it straight and down.  The dress is flashy enough that accessories aren't necessary and the simple, straight, shiny hair is probably her best accessory anyway!

In looking for a way to re-create this look on Polyvore, I came across some pretty fantastic dresses with the similar cut and shape but it was hard to find ones with a similar pattern in a similar color AND which were not "breaking the bank" expensive.  Check out the dresses below!  Can you guess which one I picked to recreate Nina's look?  I'll be posting the winning dress and recreated look later this week!  That colorful Tahari hits a lot of the same notes as Nina's look, but so do a couple of others as well.

Also check out this great Sue Wong dress I forgot to include in the collage below.  While it's not covered in sequins there's a great shape to this dress and similar style with a pattern created in sequins and bead work.

Coral and Turqouoise summer

I may have mentioned before that turquoise and coral are two of my favorite summer colors and when combined they are so fresh and inviting.  Add in some neutral accessories and you are ready for a perfect summer day!  I love the idea of adding in a wide brim floppy hat to protect your face from the sun and provide extra shading.  It also looks great with this outfit.  So chic!  I absolutely love those brown Michael Kors sunglasses.  They're so flattering on most skin tones but the brown is also more subtle than black.  My favorite pair of sunglasses were a pair of Michael Kors ones that I got for just $80 at Nordstrom.  While I love some of the other designer brands out there, I prefer a great style that flatters my face first, despite who made it.  I've even found great sunglasses at Target!  While I do know people who go for the name over the actual design, I'm a firm believer in finding the style that suits a person before looking at labels.  You can definitely score great shades that won't cost a fortune just for a name!  Also if you love that French Connection Dress you can also find a similar French Connection dress at Bloomingdales with the same wood blocking pattern, but without the little tie in front.

On Trend: Fun With Color Blocking

Color blocking is everywhere this summer!  The best thing I like about this trend is that you can rock it as simple or as loud as you want.

Scope out these great new finds in all types of color combinations and figure flattering styles!  I love the fuchsia and purple Adrianna Papell dress.  I've also been eyeing that black, white and coral BCBG dress.  And I just love that coral, white and yellow dress from Mango.  The best thing about this trend is you can take a color blocked dress that's appropriate for work (i.e.  one that's at least longer than mid-thigh length, not too low cut and which doesn't show your bra) and also wear it out on the town or to a brunch date or gathering with your girlfriends.  All you need is the one right style that suits your own personal taste and lifestyle.  But that's up to you how you want to wear it and when.  There are numerous possibilities!
