I saw this contest on Polyvore to put together looks entirely comprised of peach tones and I had to try it. Even though the contest had passed, I thought I would take a stab at it. I found a lot of things in peach. Including a peach lace coat and peach jeans! Check out these looks below. I love the ethereal look of that vintage slip dress, the pop of those jeans, the lovely bracelet, how the peach lace accentuates a classic coat and that mixed peach and tan purse. Who knew there was so much in peach tones out there?

Peach-y Keen

Clothing Craving: The Sequin Pencil Skirt
I have to admit. My first reaction when I opened the J. Crew Catalog and saw a green sequin pencil skirt on the model was sticker shock! It cost $695! For a trend I wasn't even sure I would be able to wear more than maybe once.
First, there was the embellishment to consider. The distinctive green, when paired with sequins ruled it out of a work staple or a weekend staple. On the rare occasions I would go out, I could not imagine many of them working with a green sequin pencil skirt either. Particularly if there was no big fancy place to wear it to. I'm sure someone with more creativity could fit this in anywhere, but for me I couldn't figure out how I could even make a trend like that work. Even within my south asian heritage where I am engrossed in embellished bright outfits, I couldn't wrap my mind around this for a while.
Second, there was the price. I'm not sure about this, but as a 31 year old who just started a career about five years ago and has an enormous amount of law school loan repayments, condo fees, and mortgage payments, I had to ask myself this: Am I supposed to be able to afford this? I guess if someone my age has been working right out of college, got a large law firm job after law school, just finished a medical residency program and was finally getting paid or got a bomb-diggity job and was raking in the dough, this would be totally normal. But then again, if I could afford it, I would have to really reason over the practicality of wearing it enough to have it been worth the price.
After all that analysis though, I actually just started loving this skirt! I threw all my questions out of the window. I mean, the sequins were a non-conventional choice for a pencil skirt but I really dig this look. It's fun! Of course the price still separated me from that exact skirt from J. Crew but amazingly, I found a plethora of sequin pencil skirts in different price ranges and colors to drool over. Even that rainbow one catches my eye. Check out the sequin pencil skirts I found below on Polyvore.com and see what you think about this look. Do you dig it or ditch it?

A Little Cheating Didn't Hurt Anyone...Not This Kind Anyways
It's been just over two months since I resolved to save money by "shopping" in my closet (A.K.A. wearing my clothes over and over again... which I do anyways, but I tend to buy a new thing here and there every so often). This weekend I broke down... In a big way. I guess that's what shopping withdrawal does.
Actually... Scratch that.
That is what happens when my husband goes out of town on a golfing trip with his friends and I spend time with one of my closest and oldest friends at our old high school stomping grounds. The mall. Not the Mall located in downtown D.C. where all the museums are located, although that is gorgeous too. I'm talking about Montgomery Mall in Bethesda, Maryland, one of the Westfield Shopping Malls located throughout the area. And boy! That was a dangerous/fantastic time!
I had a list, which I stuck to for the most part, of only buying things I needed. Also, we both planned on going to the nail salon for mani/pedis. In other words, a perfect day was planned. This was my list of items I needed:
- A pair of flats (shoes) to replace the worn out ones I wore to work
- A pair of nude, patent leather pumps
- A pair of open-toed flats to replace the ones I wore all last summer, which will eventually wear out soon.
- A baking sheet from Crate and Barrel
- A small glass canister for Q-tips from Crate and Barrel.
Well, I actually did really well in sticking to that list. I realize the shoes would be expensive but I planned on scouring the stores for sales. I was able to bypass both of Nordstrom's ladies' shoes departments. Yep. I browsed through one department and resisted the urge to try anything on. Then I met my friend in the second floor shoe department and we also were able to bypass the allure of these cute Tory Burch flats and a pair of Michael Kors nude, patent leather, open-toed heels, which I could not take my eyes off of. I was on a self assured high from resisting the urge to try on and then buy right on the spot!
And then, I went into Nine West. Wouldn't you know it? They were having a sale. I mean like 30% to 60% off the lowest ticketed price sale! Who couldn't resist trying on a couple of pairs. So I found these two pairs of shoes, both on sale, which fit all my criteria. Of course I had to try them on!
I was amazed! I hit two of my list items and was on shopping cloud nine! But both of these shoes were in the neutral tones family. I guess my inner shopper, while satisfied with finding our list items, was hunkering for a bit more pizzazz.
Then I saw these. Purple, 2 inch heel (perfect for work!), and on sale. I didn't stand a chance!
Yes, I had to have them! But this was my only indiscretion and it was on SALE!!
So after my giddiness and shopper's high (I believe that is an actual phenomena, usually brought about by getting things for less than their original price. The more of a discount you get, the bigger the high) and found this great pair of open-toed, almost flat, short wedges, that fit my third shoe criteria on my list. Unfortunately, these were not on sale but they fit my list criteria and were oh-so-cute! I think oh-so-cute actually counts for a lot when you're shopping!
Oh yeah! I had to have these too. They were on the list after all!
Just to show I had some restraint, this is a pair below that I tried on but did not buy.
These shoes had so much promise and could have been my third pair! But sadly, they just are not as cute on as they are in the box. That open toe box is so small and oddly placed that it only showcases less than half your big toenail and a small part of your second toenail. So sad! My wallet was happy though.
With the shoe shopping indulgences over, we made our way over to Crate and Barrel. However, my friend discovered the Zara in the mall, which was a new addition since her last trip there. So of course we tried on a bunch of clothes, hated how most of them made our bodies looked (too short and too tight were the most prevalent reasons) but we both walked away with a nice blazer and I even got a cute tee shirt out of it!
On to Crate and Barrel. Before we could walk in, we saw this hubbub going on in the center of the mall. A whole line of people were crowding over something. Here's the sign that was in front of the line.
So apparently Stacey Freaking London was in my mall! How awesome is that? She and her stylists were there giving beauty and style tips as well as make-up makeovers! I cannot believe that: (1) I did not know this beforehand, or I would have suggested meeting up at the mall earlier for an opportunity to meet her (I went up to a security guard and had to ask him what the dillio was), and (2) that I basically missed out on this opportunity, as she was supposed to leave early and that line was going no where fast.
I satisfied myself by getting my two list items from Crate and Barrel. Just the essentials! But I died over their displays. How is it that furniture stores put things together that look amazing when they're not even in a real home? It's just an open space with a few furniture pieces and accessories. And somehow, I want to throw everything out of my condo and make it look like this store!
OK, maybe not the assorted pillow display, which looks really cool in the store but not so much in a home... But how amazing is that driftwood centerpiece? I guess that's the point of home stores. They draw you in by making you want your house to look like their displays.
So the lessons I learned throughout the day were to stick to my list items and make sure I know the next time Stacey London or some other fabulous fashion guru shows up at my local mall! Oh, and of course, a bit of cheating from my original "not shopping for a while" plan didn't hurt anyone. I didn't overspend or dip into any savings so I think I played it well.
Seriously though, if Stacey London comes to your neck of the woods, take advantage of it. It's an amazing opportunity to get style tips (even though you probably don't need them) and a makeover!

Classic Summer Beauty: For the Love of Pinks and Coral
The cherry blossoms have come and gone, the trees are turning green and that can only mean that summer is right around the corner! Woo hoo! I like to use spring to experiment and get my beauty regimen ready for the summer. This year, the warmer months are bringing in new hues of blues, greens, yellows, golds and neons to add to the traditional bright summer colors.
As the lazy days of summer vacation are far behind and I now have to work through the summer, I like to stick with colors that compliment my tan skin tone and highlight that bronze summer glow. So, while I experiment a bit with loud fashion-y summer colors each year, my particular favorite look for the summer is a classic for every year and withstands the colors in trend.
After a couple of years of experimenting, I've come to love pinks and corals, which come in a variety of shades that compliment any skin tone and come in bright enough hues to favor the summer months!
The minute the warm weather hits, I pull out my box of nail polish and sort through my summer staples.

My absolute favorite summer color is this orange-y coral polish by O.P.I. called cajun shrimp, located on the left in the middle above. Here's a better look at that one!
Corals and pinks, especially when combined, just scream summer yet still are appropriate for work. Sticking to corals and pinks in your nails, lips, eyes and cheeks brings a natural summer glow to compliment any skin tone and creates a classic summer beauty look. Don't forget the bronzer!

Movie Closet Covet: Princess Diaries 2 and Clueless
Just sitting at home on a Friday night, while channel surfing on cable television, I ran across The Princess Diaries 2. I tuned in just in time to catch the scene where Princess Mia (Anne Hathaway) is shown her own castle suite with accompanying walk-in (as well as sit-in, lounge-in, dance-in, hold conferences-in) closet. And yes! It is totally fabulous! Actually besides some of her cute wardrobe choices, it is the absolute best part of the movie. It's actually kind of funny that today is Friday the 13th and I'm watching a teen romantic comedy (and later My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding...which even my husband will sit through and watch... it's just so fascinating!). But such is life!
Now that I've digressed enough, back to this fantastic closet. Don't mind the blurry parts of the pictures as I've taken them via my iPhone as the movie was coming on T.V. Check this out:
"Why yes! I do need drawers for all my sunglasses!"
I own about 5 pairs of sunglasses, accumulated over the past 10 years, only two of which are designer and I got on super sale, and I still only wear 1 or 2 pairs! This is a princess's drawers of sunglasses for sure.
Let me just walk around this giant fresh flower arrangement to the other side to see more...
Well what girl doesn't need a place to store her royal jewels?
And tiaras?
Seeing this closet reminds me of an all to familiar feeling of sweating Cher's closet in the movie Clueless. As a teenager, when that movie came out it set/sealed so many of those oh-so 90's trends. The plaids, mini skirts, baby tees and thigh highs with skirts. And the "dress" by Calvin Klein, oh so cute! Yeah, I kind of wanted that style as a teenager, but back in the day, I didn't have the patience for shopping or clothes. So my mom bought me stuff, all four sizes bigger... I know! Its so ironic that fashion/beauty is such a huge interest and passion for me now. But that is a story for another day. Does anyone remember this?
Or this? It was so amazing that all those clothes on both racks moved inside the closet like at the dry cleaners!
And please don't get me started on Carrie Bradshaw's closet either from her apartment or the one Big had built for her (he'll always be Big no matter what his real name is!) in the first Sex and the City movie! I might cry for joy! Although I personally believe the show was far superior, since this is a movie closet covet post, I'll include some stills of the closet from the movie.
Can you say "Wizzoow!!"?
However, I honestly prefer the character and intimacy of her old closet. It looked cozy (albeit, it's still pretty big) and well used. OK, I'll include this one shot of her famous closet from the show and the beginning of the first movie.
And of course, my not-so-faboo-but-I-love-it-anyways closet:
I definitely love that I have the built in lights in the closet going for me. I can always add those fancy remote controlled drawers and moving racks later. It will take just a bit of cosmetic work!
