Spring Into Pastels (and Brights, Floral and Crops!)

So I know the pieces below may not appear to go together at first glance, but in some weird way, I think they really work!  I like the idea of raising the waistline on a skirt or pant if you choose to wear a crop top. This way too much skin isn't exposed and it looks classy sexy, instead of the unwanted attention kind of sexy.  I love that A-line skirts are more prominent this spring too! They're so springy and  oh-so girly. I also love the vibrant yellow color of the skirt as well.  It really adds character to the entire outfit.  And the length of the skirt is not too long, but also not too short, and just below knee length. So this is a way to wear trends that are a bit edgier, but still with that element of class, which can appear all-too elusive when trying new things.   The fun colors in the bag and bangle also compliment the look and the earrings pick up on the pyramid shape from the bangle, but are in a more neutral gold tone.

Finally, whether you choose to cover up a little bit more, I think adding a lighter toned blazer could help a person tone down the look if you're not completely 100% sold on the crop top alone. I like how this blazer picks up on the lighter flowers in the crop top, so we don't have too many conflicting colors.  Then again, who knows, right?  You might be out and about and decide that, hey!... You look pretty darn good!

I'd definitely give this one a go.  Try incorporating one trendy piece into your outfit (the crop top/high waist, pastels, bright hues, A-line skirt, just-below-the-knee skirt, a floral) or go bold and try a few together.  It takes some time before knowing what looks will compliment your personal style but experimenting with one or two things at a time is a greatly increases the odds of your ability to put it all together well!

Gang's All Tier!

Hope you all have a Happy Easter weekend!

Even for those who don't celebrate, there's no reason to not try these Easter inspired looks.  I'm really into tiered dresses these days and I love how the cut, especially in that aqua number below is so flattering on a girl's waistline.

Maybe I'll have to give one of these a shot! I love the pastel color palette on the left and, of course, I love the aqua/turquoise and coral color combo for spring and summer.

Slim Bottoms, Billowy Tops, Flat Shoes -- Two Ways

As discussed in my recent post below, I put together two looks with slim bottoms and billowy tops. Both are mommy friendly, especially if you're still working on eliminating those last few pounds, which the loose tops are great for!  Both styles are sleek and now.  Wear a loose tee with leggings and add some cute flats and a ponytail to finish off the look. Jewelry is optional in the case you have a little one who likes to grab anything that dangles.

Dress up the look for work with slim ankle pants, pointed flats, a loose button down (which can be tucked in or left out) and top it off with a blazer. Add some fun gold accessories and a low ponytail to polish it all off for a day in the office.

Hope you enjoy these looks.  Like I mentioned earlier, I've seen this look abound in the neighborhoods near us with lots of young mommies and professionals putting their own spin on this DC favorite.

A Little Reflection

Wise words to live by: Pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood is hard work!  Apologies to anyone who has been waiting for a new post for about a year.  I found struggling with pregnancy fatigue and a full-time job was just too much to handle the further my pregnancy went along--even without the addition of keeping up the blog on my off hours.  The great news is, I have a beautiful baby boy!  And he has taken up a lot of my spare time these days.  He's doing great though, at almost seven months, and is just the recipe to brighten my day!

Little baby feet bring smiles!
That being said, I missed blogging.  Even though I don't get much traffic and don't advertise, I really like putting my thoughts on the DC style scene and lifestyle out there.  So with much effort, I'm putting in all my efforts to keep a less often, but fairly regular, updated blog with tons of new information, insight and observations from that mid-Atlantic, semi-big city perspective!

For those who are still around. You will not be disappointed.  I mean, how could you be with those cute baby feet dangling above? Adorable!

First things first, I'll be blogging in upcoming posts on how my style evolved during pregnancy and post-pregnancy and how being a new mom has changed that.  Although things changed with my lifestyle and body, I haven't given up on maintaining style that's chic and fashionable, albeit, a bit more comfortable.  But this is not only limited to pregnancy, motherhood and parenting but all things DC in the context of the lifestyle while in your 30s.  Now, I still consider myself in my early 30s, being 33.  I don't think I'm moving to the "mid" 30's until about 37! Yes! That's right, I've chosen to redefine how I feel at this age, and regardless of the number and the technicality of what's considered mid or late 30s, I don't think I'm budging for a while.

One thing I've seen around DC a lot is a cute look a lot of people wear as their street style as well as a chic work look.  It includes a pair of leggings, jeggings or slim ankle pants, topped with a loose button down or tee and sometimes with a blazer.  Throw in a pair of cute flats, a statement necklace and some small dangle earrings and you're ready to hit the town!  As a new mommy, a pair of stretchy leggings or pants, with a loose top looks hip and now, but is still comfortable.  There is no shame in continuing to wear your maternity pants or other maternity clothing after baby arrives for a few months--or even longer if necessary!  Ballet flats or loafers with slim pants, jeggings or leggings and a loose button down-or tee is a great street chic look for any new mom on the go or adding a blazer and tucking that top in is a great work look.  If you're like me and have a sweet little baby that loves to tug at your hair (and sometimes pull some hair out!) a ponytail can be worn so many different ways to keep the look cute and, if need be, professional.  Another hint I'd like to share is that, after a few months of settling into my new role as "mom" (yikes! it still takes a little getting used to) is that I've now decided to not give up my accessories when I go into the office and pack them in my purse so that after I drop my precious angel off to his nanny, I put them on in the car.  It's definitely do-able to keep a sleek mommy style with little effort, although it may take a few months to work out all the logistics!

As far as using leggings as pants, I am not a fan of thin leggings for the look because of the potential for a "wardrobe malfunction" down there (insert appropriate animal toe reference here).  But if they are of thicker material and fitted, but not tight because of.. well... you know... (toe!)... then they can be very stylish and mimic a slim cigarette pant or slim ankle pant look and still feel more comfortable.

Any thoughts on leggings as pants?  Does anyone out there have any great new mommy style advice?  I'm all ears! And because I have had so many friends who have had babies in the past year and are expecting, I am more than happy to share any tips and tricks of the trade with them as well as my blog readers -- all three of you!

Summer Fun: Taupe and Turquoise

In honor of my upcoming babymoon next week I wanted to leave you with a summer beachy look that even us preggos can pull off and look chic.  I love adding in some jewelry (like those fun bracelets) with beachwear.  Just remember to take the jewelry off if you're seriously sunbathing or swimming but for walking around and lounging in the shade, adding some accessories (hat, sunglasses, bracelets or a necklace) is always a fun way to punch up your beach casual look.

More to come... I promise I won't go so long without a post next time :)

Date Night: Peplum, Lace, Stripes

How much do I love this outfit? Let me count the ways.

  1. The peplum
  2. The lace
  3. The fabulous green color
  4. The lace on the shoes
  5. The funky, cool and fitted black and white blazer.
  6. The peacock earrings with the same shade of green and surrounding gold.
  7. The gold chains comprising the necklace.
  8. The black and white, patent leather clutch! So fab!
  9. The fact that this outfit is a bit formal, a bit sexy, a bit funky and a bit cool without trying to hard.
So far I counted nine ways. But the more I look, the more I find to love! *Sigh*  I cannot wait to be able to wear something similar like this on a night out.  I bought a funky black and white striped blazer last year from Modcloth and it's one of my favorite pieces in my wardrobe, although I haven't figured out exactly how to "work it" yet.  This gives me a new idea!

Summery chic

As you may have noticed, I've been a bit MIA from blogging in the past couple months.  Mainly because I was so tired from work and pregnancy that I had a hard time doing anything at home but catching up on rest!  I promise I have a million and one ideas yet to post here so I have no where near dried up on my material yet.  Although posts might be a little fewer and far between, I thought I'd give you some much awaited for outfit eye candy to get your minds focused on summer wear.

What can I say about this look except that I love how elegant and simple it is.  Dressed up but a bit casual, this can go from a daytime affair to a night out.  I am totally in love with white pants -- summer or winter -- because they always look so fresh and so crisp!  I definitely don't follow the from Memorial Day to Labor Day only white pants rule, so feel free to rock them out when you want to freshen up your style.  Particularly because there are so many great winter whites, how could you possible neglect white in the winter if you see something cute? Go for it!

I also think the top is elegantly sexy and sophisticated.  Adding in the lemon yellow really brings the summer into it all.  And then I thought, "Oh heck! why not add in some fun pistachio/minty hues in the accessories too?"  So that's what I went for.  Overall I would love to be able to pull this off at some chic daytime event like an outdoor sporting fundraiser or something along those lines.  I also love the model's hair tied back off of her face.  Although I'm a hair down gal, I can really dig how putting your hair up looks cleaner with this type of outfit.

White pants are one of my favorite summer obsessions, what are yours??
