Friday Favorites: Inspired by the Sea

It's been a while since my husband and I have devoted time to furnishing our home and, after moving in last year,  we're about half way done.  We've taken a break since buying our dining table earlier this year.

Although many of the rooms still need furniture, there is also a lot of decorating to do!   I assume this is just going to be a long process since we have to figure out what works, find  things we really and truly like and save up the money to buy them.

To get some inspiration for our blank spaces I turn to Pinterest and Polyvore as well as some home DIY blogs and catalogs from furniture stores like Pottery Barn, Arhaus, Ballard Designs and Crate and Barrel.  I just love how put together the rooms look in photos!  I absolutely wish I could emulate that in my own home.  Unfortunately my attempts don't always come out as I expect.

Cats not included in decor.

As you can see, there are blank walls, the centerpiece needs work and, although I love the pillows, there could be some updates in the future.

In the meantime, while looking for inspiration I came across some of the sweetest looking sea-inspired items, including the driftwood mirror below, the white coral inspired mirror, sea glass bathroom accessories, the capiz shell chandelier, river rock filled candleholders and those cute glass fishies vase fillers.  I am absolutely digging this ocean blue color scheme with the white and brown/wood accents, which really stand out.  By far, one of my favorites in the collection below is the glass fishies vase filler from Crate and Barrel!   I think the cats will even love those!

What do you think of sea inspired accessories?  Is there anything below that calls out "must have!" or "buy me!" to you?

Fall 2012 Beauty Picks

With the cooler mornings and lower humidity kicking in this week I found myself thinking how fall is right around the corner.  I can't even believe that some kids are back in school already!

That got me thinking about my makeup for the fall.  While I still like to keep it basic and neutral for work, I do like to change up my every day nail colors and eye colors and add in a bit more glow to my face that won't come with all the sun exposure in the summer.  As you can see below, I've included a nude lip, brown and gold eye colors, which also make a great non-traditional smoky eye and black mascara.  I've also included basic powder based foundation, an all over face glow color by Bare Escentuals and a blush by Nars in a universally flattering color called, (gasp!) orgasm.

Also, adding in a heavier fragrance like a perfume, as opposed to a body spray, with a bit spicier scent is another way I like to change things up in the colder months.  My old favorite fragrance used to be Burburry Tender Touch, which had a hint of jasmine and white flower but smelled a bit more musky. Unfortunately they discontinued it. I guess me and my three friends loving it wasn't enough for it to stay around!  Since then I've explored other avenues but haven't settled on a favorite, although I really like the smell of Chanel Chance from the sample I have and I also switch between the Michael by Michael Kors perfume and Chanel No. 5, which was a Christmas present a couple of years ago, but the bottle is so big I haven't nearly finished it yet!

Some of my favorite products are also included below.  I love Bare Escentuals makeup, Nars bronzer and blush, Lancome Definicils mascara and Laura Mercier lip gloss.  Other brands I really love include Makeup Forever, MAC and Bobby Brown.

Do you transition into a fall beauty regimen?  Are there colors you like best in different seasons?

The Purple Peacoat Eater

As mentioned in an earlier post, one of my favorite colors for the fall is purple.  And in the spirit of loving purple for the fall, I set out on a journey to find a great purple peacoat!   Unfortunately the nicest ones I found on Polyvore all were super duper expensive.  Which means this will probably be a hot fall trend and hopefully filter down to the masses in styles we can all afford!

Apparently I'm not the only one who is digging purple for the fall.  On the Today Show last Friday, they also mentioned purple being a big trend for the fall, albeit in nail colors, but this color is definitely on the radar.  Also mentioned were statement pumps like these.

In addition to the purple coats below, check out this gorgeous purple Tracy Reese Coat on Modcloth:

 Lovely, isn't it?

Check out these coats below!  I predict this is just the tip of the iceberg in the purple peacoat trend!  Victoria's Secret online always carries a variety of affordable coats in many different colors so if you like the purple coat trend, give them a try.  They don't appear to have a "purple" color per se, but the "Bordeaux beauty" is a burgundy/plum color that may appeal to purple lovers as well!

Recreating Zac Posen Fall 2012 For Less

So I saw this Zac Posen Runway Show look for his Fall 2012 line and I just loved the idea of mixing the feminine flouncy skirt with a tweed fitted blazer in that feminine meets menswear type of style.  As you can see from the model below, who's mouth is open in a weird way (why is that considered model-y to pose like a fly trap?), the full skirt is also in a gorgeous blue jewel tone and a texture to top it off, adding to the richness of the look.

While I could hardly find an exact match for this, I thought that a cobalt blue dress with full lace skirt would work really well, topped with a fitted black tweed blazer and black scarf.  Check out the results from my search below.  In this Polyvore collage, I paired this lace dress with a fitted bodice and full skirt (I love that tulle detail coming from underneath the skirt!) with a basic fitted black tweed blazer.  Although you can pair this with a cute black doctor's bag or hobo and a pair of basic black pumps, to add a bit of edge to the look I added in some studded booties -- perfect for the fall -- and a cute embellished clutch.  I wish I could wear this look out somewhere right now.  And then I remember I'm totally trying to save money, which is why shopping for whole new outfits isn't in the budget right now. *Sigh*  But a girl can dream right?  Putting looks together online and using Pinterest to create a virtual wishlist of everything I love online helps take the edge off of not shopping for the fun stuff as often.

What do you think of this look?  It's not necessarily something I would normally wear all together but I am really loving how it all works!

Are there any Fall 2012 looks you're dying for right now?  I'm also eying the purple trench coats  and pea coats I've seen!  More on those a bit later!

Instant Manicure: Easy Peasy Nailpolish Strips

Just a few weeks ago, I thought about giving these Sally Hansen Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips a try.  I had seen them advertised and loved the idea of just sticking some pre-cut nail polish strips on my nails with no mess or drying time.

So I checked out my local CVS to see what they had there and read the instructions on the Nail Polish Strips box and gauge how easy it would actually be.

From the display, it looked like they came in a variety of colors, styles and designs.

So I decided to go with sparkly pink for a first time.  It looked easy enough from the box instructions.

Here's what's on the inside.  The nail strips, a file, and a cuticle pushy thing-a-ma-jigy.

And of course, more detailed instructions... But they still don't look too bad.

OK, so in my excitement, I laid everything out nicely and neatly in front of me.

Basically, you clean and file your nails first (I kind of skipped over the filing part, and using nail polish remover to completely clean them! whoops!).  Then you're ready for the strips.  Just peel off the backing and it should stick right to the nail.  Then you're supposed to file off the excess.  So that's what I did and here are the results from Trial #1:

Hmm, that doesn't look right.  It doesn't even look like I could file the excess off because it was so plastic-y.  After reading the instructions again, however, I realized that this plastic-y excess on the top part there was actually another backing that needed to be peeled off!   Sheesh!  Note to all trying this at home:  Read the instructions thoroughly and basically, don't forget to peel off both sides of the nail polish strip. Trial #2 looked more like what I'd expect the nail polish strip to be.  The excess hanging off was easy to deal with.

While the instructions tell us to file off the excess, I found it easier to pull it down toward the edge of the nail which basically cuts it off mostly.  It was flexible so you could push it down and basically pull the end like that.  I folded the little bit leftover under the nail and used the file to get rid of that.  With any that hangs over the cuticles, I just used the wooden thing-a-ma-jigy to help trim off those bits.  It came off pretty clean.

Ta-da! One down, nine to go!

Two down! Eight to go!

One hand down! One more to go!

I got the hang of it after playing around with the first hand.  It was a lot easier to work on my other hand.  It took maybe 20-30 minutes after reading the instructions, messing up, and redoing the first nail again and the rest of my nails.  Not too shabby with the learning curve included!  After the second hand was finished I just LOOOOOOVED how it came out.  Now it was time to admire the end results.  I could not stop admiring my nails the first few days.  Here I am posing with my Kindle.

Admiring my instant mani while typing.

And here I am doing the dishes!  Love those nails.

After putting these to the test,  they actually do not chip for a while and lasted up to almost two weeks before I decided to change them out for a sparkly gold color that I'm wearing right now and in the middle of my second week with.  For $10 this is a great idea for anyone who needs a clean, manicured look for a certain occasion.  You don't get all the frills with the manicure, or a massage, but the price and lack of drying time is making this a favorite go-to product of mine.  With a wedding this weekend I'm going to try the sparkly blue ones next. Then hopefully I'll get over my sparkly fetish!

The review is in and these nail polish strips are easy to apply and look AWESOME.  They are definitely worth a try!
